GUELTIG CORK

60 Year Success Story

1953

Beginning: Company founder Heinrich Gültig, with the support of the Wine Institute in Weinsberg develops the “GUELTIG Process”- the sterilization of wine corks using sulphur dioxide. This technology is the basis for sterile bottling and has became a worldwide standard.

1969

Transition: Günther Bleckmann becomes the new owner of the company.

1970

Expansion: GUELTIG’s first foreign subsidiary, BOUCHONS GULTIG, is founded in France.

1977

R&D: GUELTIG, with the assistance of Swiss scientist Hans Tanner, Gueltig pioneers research to examine the cause of cork taint.

1981

Breakthrough: Hans Tanner publishes the first findings of his research. A microbial conversion of chlorine molecules, 2, 4, 6 trichloroanisole (TCA), is identified as the primary agent responsible for cork taint.

1986

Revolution: Building on Tanner’s findings, GUELTIG revolutionizes the cork industry by becoming the first cork manufacturer to prevent the contact of natural cork with chloranisoles. Chlorine washing is replaced with peroxide washing, which is now the worldwide standard, still in use today.

1991

Continuity: Günther Bleckmann retires from active business on his 70th birthday and his son, Rüdiger, assumes sole responsibility for the company.

1996

EVOLUTION 4: A new type of natural cork with integrated resin coating and pigmentation is developed and becomes an international best seller.

1998

Alternative: GUELTIG introduces its synthetic cork VISION®.

2004
